About Gillian

With Professor Sue Black in Dundee

Gillian Duff studied at Crime Writing and Forensic Investigation at Dundee University. Crossing the Line, completed as fulfilment of the MLitt for which she was awarded a distinction, won the university’s coveted Val McDermid Prize.

Gillian Duff spent much of her adult life living in Asia – first in Japan and then in Hong Kong – but is now based back at home in the north-east of Scotland. She writes twisty crime with unique protagonists, a strong forensic streak and a historical dimension. Her novel, Act of Betrayal, is a mystery thriller set in Edinburgh featuring an ex-con, an academic and an ancient confession.

In 2019, Gillian completed an MLitt in Crime Writing and Forensic Investigation, for which she secured a Distinction. Her novel Crossing the Line won the Val McDermid Prize and the Scottish Association of Writers Pitlochry Quaich. She is also author of The Domino Effect, a graphic crime story published by UniVerse.

In addition to travel, Gillian loves adventure and has trekked to Mt Everest Base Camp and Machu Picchu, enjoyed scuba diving in the Andaman Sea and landed a plane at Hong Kong’s notorious Kai Tak Airport. She now lives a quiet life in the Scottish countryside with her friendly Jackadoodle.
